How to Create FTP Account in cPanel

FTP or File Transfer Protocol is a way to upload and download files to hosting using special software like FileZilla. FTP is more suitable for transferring large numbers of files or large files that cannot be uploaded through File Manager. With FTP, you can also give limited access to developers or team without sharing cPanel password.

When to Use FTP

  • Upload many website files at once
  • Transfer large files over 512MB
  • Give access to developers without sharing cPanel login
  • Regular website backups
  • Sync files between local computer and hosting

How to Create FTP Account

  1. Login to your Satelitweb cPanel

FTP vs SFTP vs FTPS

FTP (Port 21):

  • Unencrypted transfer
  • Less secure for sensitive data
  • Most compatible with all clients

FTPS (Port 990):

  • FTP with SSL/TLS encryption
  • More secure than regular FTP
  • Supported by most FTP clients

SFTP (Port 22):

  • Uses SSH for transfer
  • Most secure
  • Requires SSH access to be enabled

On Satelitweb hosting, FTPS is available for all packages. SFTP is available for packages that include SSH access.

Troubleshooting FTP

Cannot connect:

  • Check username is in full format with @domain
  • Make sure password is correct, case sensitive
  • Try changing port to 21 or 990
  • Firewall or antivirus might block connection

Connected but cannot see files:

  • Check FTP account directory setting
  • Folder that was set might not exist

Upload failed:

  • Check hosting disk space is available
  • Check FTP account quota
  • Filename might contain invalid characters

Slow transfer:

  • Check internet connection
  • Reduce simultaneous transfers in FileZilla
  • Server might be busy

FTP accounts are very useful for collaboration with team or developers. You can create multiple FTP accounts with access to different folders. If you need help setting up FTP, Satelitweb support team is ready to assist.
