How to Create Email Forwarder in cPanel
Forwarder is a feature to automatically redirect emails from one address to another. For example all emails coming to info@yourbusiness.com automatically get forwarded to your personal gmail. Pretty handy right?
When Do You Need Forwarder?
- Want to check all emails from just one inbox
- Forward support emails to multiple staff at once
- Backup emails to another address
- Transitioning from old email to new one
How to Create Forwarder
- Login to cPanel
- Find and click Forwarders menu in Email section
- Click Add Forwarder button
- Fill Address to Forward: type email name to forward (without @domain)
- Select domain from dropdown
- In Destination section, choose Forward to Email Address
- Type destination email address (can be gmail, yahoo, or other email)
- Click Add Forwarder
Done! From now on all emails to that address will be forwarded automatically.
Forward to Multiple Emails
Want to forward one email to several people? Just create multiple forwarders:
- Create first forwarder: support@ to staff1@gmail.com
- Create second forwarder: support@ to staff2@gmail.com
- Create third forwarder: support@ to staff3@gmail.com
Everyone gets a copy of the same email.
Difference Between Forwarder vs Email Account
Forwarder:
- Only redirects email, no inbox of its own
- Cannot login to webmail
- Cannot send email from that address
- Does not use storage
Email Account:
- Has its own inbox
- Can login to webmail
- Can send and receive email
- Uses hosting storage
If you need both, create Email Account first then add Forwarder from the same address.
Deleting Forwarder
- Go to Forwarders in cPanel
- Find the forwarder you want to delete
- Click Delete
- Confirm
Things to Note
Avoid email loops:
Do not create circular forwards. Email A forwards to B, B forwards to A. This causes big problems on the server.
Email goes to spam:
Sometimes forwarded emails land in spam at destination. This is because of SPF check. Solution is to whitelist forwarder address at destination email.
Troubleshooting
Email not reaching destination:
- Check spam folder at destination email
- Make sure forwarder is active in cPanel
- Check if destination mailbox is full
Very long delay:
- Normal if delay is 1-5 minutes
- If more than 30 minutes, contact support
